چکیده

The paper demonstrates virtual instrument software that enables performing simple and fast testing and metrological characterisation of any PC sound card in waveform recorder applications. In addition to the visualisation of recorded signal patterns in time and spectral domain, the software directly computes a variety of basic metrological parameters of input analogue channels e.g. effective number of bits, THD, THD+noise, SINAD, etc. according to IEEE Std 1057, IEEE Std. 1241 and DYNAD. The parameter determination is performed in time as well as in spectral domain to compare the achieved results. The software was developed in LabWindows/CVI (C language) with implementation of low-level Win32 API multimedia functions. The authors’ intention is to apply the software for computer component vendors and in educational demonstration of ADC testing principles. The paper contains also a few examples of achieved interesting results from testing some PC sound cards and practical authors’ experiences from PC sound card testing.

A new method for acquisition and analysis of single unit recording data

Single unit recording has been used as a well-known technique to study the electrical behavior of neurons. In this respect, the classical methods are rather expensive. In this study a simple and inexpensive method for single unit recording studies has been introduced. Computer sound card was used for data acquisition. Neural responses were saved via simple sound applicable packages and then ana...

Dirt Cheap 3D Spatial Audio

The advent of affordable sophisticated audio solutions for the home PC market has paved the way for low-cost true three-dimensional spatial audio, which can produce a sound effect from any 3D position source. The home entertainment market has guided the development of audio solutions for PCs through hardware support for stereo and Dolby R ©Surround Sound versions 4.1, 5.1, and 7.1. However, the...

How Do Multiple Network Cards Influence the Software Router Performance?

The usage of cost-efficient and dynamically adaptable commodity PC hardware instead of specialized networking hardware has aroused strong interest in software routers. Testbed measurements as well as modeling and simulations of such system are important methodologies for finding bottlenecks in the packet processing to predict and optimize the performance. In this paper, we investigate the impac...

Audio Arduino - an ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) Audio Driver for FTDI-based Arduinos

A contemporary PC user, typically expects a sound card to be a piece of hardware, that: can be manipulated by ’audio’ software (most typically exemplified by ’media players’); and allows interfacing of the PC to audio reproduction and/or recording equipment. As such, a ’sound card’ can be considered to be a system, that encompasses design decisions on both hardware and software levels that also...
